In today's first lecture we covered an introduction to new communication technologies, exploring the old and new techniques within society.
Josh Nicholas (lecturer) gave us a brief outline of some of the various types of communication techniques.
Firstly we learnt about the older types of communication technologies, these comprised of;
oral (oldest form)
graphical
written - postal system, which drew the gap between one side of the world and another
radio telephone - which allowed people to communicate instantaneously with others
television
all of these older types of communication technologies are considered one way media - where the media can convey information to you but you are unable to respond to it.
the new communication technologies explored included;
computer
mobile phones - originally designed to make phone calls solely. they progressed to have alot of similiar qualities and abilities and the common computer.
internet - communicate instantaneously.
email: slowly dying out
message boards and discussion lists
IM: ruining people ability to communicate effectively
Twitter
Blogging
Social networking: facebook, myspace
all of these new communication technologies are slowly narrowing the scope of communication abilities amongst people within society.
convergence is considered the combining of several functions/activities for easier access and utilisation, an example of this is the 'smart phone' - where you can combine the aspects of a computer and a phone in one.
During our tutorials we created a gmail account for course information to be received, we also created the start of what will become our blog, making at least two weekly posts.
overall the first week can be deemed as a very useful introduction into the world of new communication technologies and the rest of the semester should lead to a lot more knowledge being obtained.
